Ami was, in her past life, the princess of Mercury, the planet named for the Roman god of eloquence and cleverness. Ami is a very smart girl (rumor is in Crossroads Junior High that her IQ is 300!) and is basically the brains of the Sailor Senshi operation. She is represented by the water or ice, and is every bit cool, calm, and collected as one would expect. Ami thinks before she acts, and Sailor Mercury's powers are mostly defensive and for destracting the monster, to allow the others a chance to attack. But Sailor Mercury is also as brave and determined as she is smart, and often uses the guise of being physically weak to her advantage. She once took on Prince Darien (he was under Beryl's hypnosis spell at the time) and won because she stuck to her shabon spray/bubbles and used his overconfident attitude against him.

Along with her bubble and water/ice attacks, Mercury also has a tiny blue computer with the symbol of Mercury on it and a special (light blue) visor. Both allow her to search for and get information about almost anything. [In "Time Bomb," (Series 1, Episode 6) watch the screen of the computer. In one scene, on the bottom-left, it says "Prime Directives". In another scene Mercury presses some buttons and it reads: "1 - Serve the public trust 2 - Protect the innocent 3 - Uphold the law". These are the directives programmed into Officer Murphy in the movie "Robocop". More references to this included "targetting suspect" and "arrest mode".]
When it comes to school work and general organization of education and training (be it school or senshi training) Ami will usually take the lead because she has what most of the other girls don't: patience, discipline, and directio
